Seán is a registered Australian and New Zealand Patent Attorney, with more than twenty years of IP experience. Seán is based in Melbourne, Australia.
While studying for his law degrees, Seán worked for a subscription-based television channel broadcaster M-NET (abbreviation of Electronic Media Network). Seán enjoyed the great opportunities presented in this newly developing environment and worked his way up from client service to a Project Coordinator for the largest technology upgrade project undertaken by M-NET at the time. It was at M-NET that Seán learned the importance of a client-focus driven approach to dealings with clients.
Seán initially worked in the field of patent law in South Africa. A further element of Seán’s South African practise included advising clients on the relevant provisions of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, in particular those relating to bioprospecting and cultural knowledge.
Seán’s IP practice in South Africa included acting for many of the academic biotechnology and biomedical research facilities based at universities. Seán was fortunate to work with one of the top litigation attorneys at the time in South Africa, which gave him an abiding interest in litigation.
In 2001, Seán was recruited to a major IP firm in Sydney, Australia. After completing a masters in IP law and qualifying as an Australian patent and trademark attorney, Seán was recruited to another major IP firm, this time in Melbourne. In Australia, Seán interest has predominantly been in the field of patent law relating to biotechnology and biomedicine.
When the opportunity presented itself, Seán undertook PhD studies in the Anatomical Neurochemistry Laboratory of Professor David Pow, an internationally renowned neuroscientist.
After completing his PhD, Seán worked in private practise and tertiary education before joining Martin IP.
As well as practising in the field of IP law, Seán also lectures molecular biology and medical genetics at a medical school.
As well as practising in the field of IP law, Seán is an Assistant Professor at a medical school where he lectures legal medicine, molecular biology, medical genetics, and human physiology.
